Music history was made in Kópavogur on March 14th and 15th as the artist Laufey concluded her "A Matter of Time" tour with two sold-out shows at the Kórinn Arena. With 8,000 guests attending each night, these concerts were the largest seated events ever held in Iceland.

Ensuring the safety of 16,000 fans over a single weekend requires more than just luck; it demands rigorous engineering, meticulous planning, and seamless coordination. ÖRUGG Consulting Engineers was proud to be the lead safety consultant for the event, responsible for the comprehensive design of evacuation procedures, emergency response management, and safety layouts.

Engineering Safety for Record-Breaking Crowds

Transforming a multi-purpose sports arena into a world-class concert hall for a seated audience of 8,000 presents unique challenges. Unlike standing events, seated arrangements change the flow of movement and the accessibility of exit routes.

Our team’s work focused on several critical pillars:

• Evacuation Analysis & Flow Modeling: We performed advanced calculations to determine the most efficient exit routes, ensuring that the record-breaking crowd could vacate the building swiftly and safely in any scenario.

• Safety & Exit Mapping: Specialized safety and evacuation maps were developed to provide clear guidance for both staff and guests, marking all emergency equipment and primary/secondary exit paths.

• Integrated Response Planning: We drafted and managed the comprehensive response protocols that synchronized the actions of venue staff, the artist's production team, and external emergency services.
