SAFETY

Work-related accidents/incidents can have severe consequences for the person(s) suffering from an incident, and it can also affect negatively the entity (company/institution) involved in terms of operational delays, plus financial- and reputation- loss. On the other hand implementing and operating an effective Health and Safety Management reduces, or eliminates, such risk and contributes to financial gains and improved image. In addition, it will also assist relevant stakeholders to achieve health and safety prerequisite for the international standard BREEAM (Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method)
  • Health and Safety Plans
  • Health and Safety Management Systems ISO 45001
  • Risk Assessment for all stages of projects
  • Jobs safety analysis
  • Safety-by-design
  • To assess and control risks from dangerous substances
  • Health and Safety cultural change program
  • Fall and lift protection plan
  • Legal and contractual compliance review
  • Health and safety site inspections including recommendations
  • Health and safety audits in accordance with ISO 19001
  • Incident and accident investigations
Health and safety plans
ÖRUGG consulting engineers has extensive experience in designing health and safety plans for all type of organisations. This includes risk assessment and holistic view of safety.

ÖRUGG international experience in implementing Health and Safety plans and being leaders in some of the largest construction projects globally is imperative for all potential customers that seeks support in the specalized field of Health and Safety. Just to mention few examples, the front runner project is the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (6450 MW) which is the largest hydroelectric project ever build in Africa once completed, and the plant will be the 7th largest globally. In addition, the Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme located in South Africa, whereas the project involves the construction of a generation and pumping plant with a total installed capacity of 1,100 MW, which will allow the production of electricity at peak times and the re-utilization of the water pumping into the upstream reservoir (21000 MW) in times of lower demand.
ISO 45001 OH&S system
The system specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, and gives guidance for its use. ÖRUGG helps organizations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OH&S performance.

Örugg consultants have extensive experience in developing, implementing and operating an integrated Health-, Safety- and Environmental- Management System based on ISO 45001 and ISO 14001. There are many benefits and saving when an integrated system is established. An example is an integrated HSE Management System implemented for a large international pharmaceutical company, Actavis Iceland (Now Teva), whereas the ISO 45001 (was OHSAS 18001) and the ISO 14001 certifications were both achieved after 12 months of implementation period, separately.
Accident investigation
Incident, near-miss, and accidents investigation provides employers and workers the opportunity to identify hazards in their operations and shortcomings in their safety and health programs. This is an important part of holistic inspection of the health and safety system.

Accident investigation is the process of making the correct observations at the correct time, starting with immediate scene management, and then to collect relevant information and evidence related to the accident. Then, to analyze and conclude on the data collected, establish root causes and corrective preventive actions in accordance with hierarch of control, and finally to establish a lesson learned case to disseminate throughout the organization or relevant target groups so repetitive accidents are prevented. Precise, timely and discipline working methods and practices are imperative in this process for all stakeholders. The aftermath of an accident or serious incident can be significant in terms of legal consequences; financial loss; delays; fines; prosecutions; premium increase; medical– and absence cost, plus loss of reputation. It is therefore imperative that an objective internal investigation is conducted to establish root causes and corrective preventive actions in order to re-gain trust from all stakeholders. ÖRUGG has extensive international experience with bespoken international investigation methodologies based on international recognized training, such as the so called “Incident Investigator’s Toolkit” which has IOSH accreditation*, and includes:
·  Scene management
·  Establishing and analysing Significan Incident Data analysis (SID-Grid)
·  Establishing and analysing Barrier evaluation
·  Investigative Interviewing
Risk assessment
The process of identifying hazards and evaluating the risks to health and safety arising from these hazards is a very important part of the H&S work, and necessary for taking account of the existing risk controls. The risk assessment should be reviewed and updated on an annual basis or due to changes in a process, activity, organization or equipment changes.

ÖRUGG Consulting Engineers knowledge foundations are from decades of experience in Risk Management Processes and methodologies for all phases of projects and operations which has demonstrated proven results in eliminating accidents and reducing accident rate over period of time.    The Risk Management Process is based on the Risk Assessment Pyramid Structure, whereby the foundations of the Risk Assessment Pyramid Structure is the Baseline Risk Assessment conducted during the project preparation, followed by the Issue Based Risk Assessment dealing with specific activities and eventually, and most importantly the process is completed with the Job Safety Analysis which involves all employees in the process prior starting a shift, and specifically prior starting a critical activity. This approach to riskmanagement has proven records in the following projects:
·  Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project. Project value:> 5 Billion Euros. Achievements of LTI rate reduction of 30% over 3 years period and reaching twice 2.5 million Lost Time Injury Free Man-hours.
·  Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme Project – South Africa. Project value: > 1.3 Billion Euros. LTI rate reduction of 79% over 5 years period, and achieving twice two million Lost Time Injury Free Man-hours and three times of achieving one million Lost Time Injury Free Man-hours.
·  Mozambique LNG Project (“Resettlement Village Construction Project” and “Pioneer Camp expansion in Mozambique”). Project value: > 250 Million Euros (Project preparation, mobilization and start-up)
